For the more adventurous folks we’ll send you out to Keepsake Cidery for a longer, more challenging bike and boat loop. For this adventure we recommend that you use your own bike that is suited for gravel roads and hills. Our rental bikes are better suited for paved paths and city streets. If you are unsure if your bike is capable of this adventure we can help you assess. From Farmstead Bike Shop we’ll send you up river to Keepsake Cidery - about 7 miles south. Lock up the bikes at the Cidery. The folks at Keepsake will direct you to the boat landing where you’ll find boats locked up and waiting for you! From there you will float or paddle back to Northfield. The whole trip takes 3-6 hours depending on conditions and how much effort you put into the pedals and the paddle. Oh yeah, and how long you stop to enjoy Keepsake Cidery and the Cannon Valley Wilderness. Things to keep in mind - Biking from Northfield to downtown Dundas is pretty easy for most folks. However, the bike route from Dundas to Keepsake can be a challenge for some. The route is significantly more hilly and includes about 1.5 miles of gravel. The paddling portion is about 8 miles from the cidery to Northfield. We provide the kayak, paddle, life jacket and lock. River trips - leave a vehicle at one of our end points of either Dundas or Northfield and travel to our start location on the river. Meet us there for launching assistance or come at your leisure. Lake paddling - your kayak will be securely locked near the entrance to Union Lake. Return it to the same location when you are done for the day. Pick up and go! Swing by our business location to pick up your kayak and gear for a day, two day or week long rental. There is a pavilion and a boat launch here, no beach. Our paddleboards are meant for lake use only. -OR- Rent a stand up paddleboard to take to the lake, up North or wherever else you feel like! Pick up and return a board, paddle and life-jacket on the same day, or keep it for the weekend with a multi-day rental. You will be transporting your rented board(s). They are 11ft long and need to be securely strapped to a vehicle with cam-buckle or canoe specific straps (available at Menards 3 blocks away). Ratchet straps are not permitted as they will damage the boards. If you do not return the equipment, or you return the board damaged, you will be fined an additional $400/board, $100/paddle, $25/life jacket. Do NOT use these paddleboards on a river. We are not transporting people this year. Your paddleboard rental will be waiting for you on the bank of Union Lake or at our business location. Our boathouse is located in Dundas and our Bike Shop is located in Northfield. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources offers a very comprehensive description of The Cannon River and the surrounding area. Maps and general paddling information can be found there as well. Our section of the Cannon is a fairly calm float through beautiful scenery. It is perfect for families and novice kayakers. Have a paddling party on the lake! Union Lake is a quiet lake just off of Hwy 35 at the Northfield exit. Find your way to Albers County Park. There you’ll find a fabulous pavilion, kids play area, and a LOT of steps leading down to the lake to just kick back and plant a beach chair in the water. There is a boat ramp 100ft to the north of the park where we lock up all of our kayaks and paddleboards that we rent out. Park your vehicle at the park and walk over to the boat ramp to pick up your gear. There is a dock at the boat ramp, but DO NOT try to step from the dock into your kayak or onto your paddleboard. Just walk it down into the water and once you are deep enough step into/onto your watercraft. You can maneuver your watercraft over to the dock while in the water and use the dock to stabilize yourself. Please be cognizant and courteous of motorized boats and kindly leave room for the fishermen.
